Dubai summers are hard on batteries. Heat accelerates the chemistry inside them, and a battery that would last five years in a mild climate often gives up in two or three here. But not every no-start is the battery. The sound your car makes tells you which one it is.
Listen first
- Nothing at all, no lights — completely flat battery, or a loose terminal.
- Dashboard lights but only a click — battery too weak to turn the starter, or a failing starter motor.
- Slow, laboured cranking — battery on the way out. It may start once more, then not again.
- Cranks strongly but never fires — not the battery. Fuel, spark or immobiliser.
- Nothing and the car is in Drive — check the gear selector is fully in Park.
Quick checks worth doing
- Terminals: white or green crust, or a cable you can wiggle by hand
- Fuel gauge — it is more common than people admit
- Key fob battery, if the car uses keyless start
- Steering lock — turn the wheel slightly while pressing start
When a jump start is enough
If the battery is simply flat — lights left on, short trips, or a car parked for two weeks in August — a jump gets you going, and a roadside technician can do it in minutes. Drive for at least 20 to 30 minutes afterwards so the alternator puts charge back in.

When it needs a tow
- It jumps, runs, then dies again within minutes — the alternator is not charging
- Cranks well but will not fire — fuel or ignition, not something to fix on a kerb
- Burning smell, smoke, or a warning light for oil or temperature
- Battery is swollen or leaking — do not attempt a jump
Making the next battery last
- Park in shade or basement parking where you can — heat is the main killer
- Drive long enough to recharge; a five-minute run every day slowly drains it
- Have it tested before summer if it is over two years old
- Clean the terminals when you service the car
If the car is somewhere awkward — a tower basement, a tight car park — say so when you call, so the right equipment comes the first time.
